How to Sustain a Well-Tuned Business Plan

We are excited to launch a new seminar geared toward the needs of advanced young artists and emerging professional singers. During the seminar, each singer will create a career “business plan” and commit to a schedule to revise and refine. The session is designed to take an intimidating and often stressful process and make it practical and accessible to even the busiest of emerging professional singers.

This seminar has been a work in progress for some time, and we have gathered the input and feedback of so many educators and professionals. A special thank you goes out to educator Dr. Dana Brown, mezzo-soprano and career consultant Dorothy Byrne, and consultant Mislav Kos.

The Details:

Target: For advanced young artists and emerging professionals.

Honorarium: Please email info@velvetsinger.com for pricing.

Duration: The seminar is designed to last two and a half (2.5) hours.

Workbook: The seminar uses a customized workbook, which provides an efficient and practical platform for rich discussion. Please Download the Workbook completed with example answers.

Objective: The seminar helps singers create a career business plan and adopt a continual process for refining their plans going forward.

Impact: Singers will leave the session with a dramatically improved sense of self-awareness and empowerment over their path. The seminar begins by discussing the relevant issues a well-crafted plan is designed to help solve.

Integration: Some singers may have previously drafted a business plan through school or privately. We will build off of those experiences and integrate our work into one process.

Singers will:

  • Assess strengths / weaknesses
  • Identify / mitigate risks
  • Analyze priorities
  • Define and rank goals
  • Create a marketing strategy
  • Articulate core values
  • Compose a career vision and mission statement
  • Create a schedule to revisit / refine

Interview on “The Voice Within” by Travis Whitlock, Tenor

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

Please see this recently posted interview, titled “The Alchemy of Talent: Interview with Tenor Bill Bennett “ by Travis Whitlock, writing for his blog, The Voice Within.

Travis is a graduate student at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, specializing in lyric tenor repertoire including Bach, Handel, Mozart, Purcell and Rossini. I initially met him through Dr. Dana Brown’s graduate-level seminar, “Topics for the Professional Singer,” and was immediately impressed with how Travis developed an active blog following and mailing list, and the professionalism with which he carries himself.

Mostly he writes about me as a person and as a performer. You may be interested to read his kind comments on Velvet Singer Software:

“Bill has developed a software, Velvet Singer, that competitively meets the needs of today’s performers. The most fascinating point about Bill’s software is that it was really designed with the singer in mind. With it, performers are able to organize lessons, run reports on their repertoire, keep a database of various contacts, and even sync with outside applications; and this is just the very tip of the iceberg. Essentially it’s a tool that helps performers take control of their world and plan for results.” Read More.

Bennett Featured In Chicago Symphony Video

Friday, August 20th, 2010

It was a great privilege to be featured in this “CSO Musicians On Muti” video. Our new Music Director Riccardo Muti is truly one of the great conductors of our era and it will be a thrill to perform Verdi’s Otello with Maestro Muti at Carnegie Hall this spring!

Convention Results

Monday, June 14th, 2010

The data is in — the Classical Singer Convention was a huge success for Velvet Singer! Velvetsinger.com had a huge boost in hits over the three days of the convenention (up 120%) as well as a sustained boost for the week following (up 95%).

In fact, if you Google “Classical Singer Convention,” guess who’s website comes up just after classicalsinger.com?

I was thrilled to meet so many talented and empowered singers as well as many faculty and administrators from around the world, but it is also neat to see the numbers. Thank you again to those at Classical Singer magazine for making these genuine connections (in person and through the internet) possible.

To other vendors, schools, and opera companies, consider the 2011 convention an absolute must. You will see the “ROI” and have fun doing it.

We Help You Get Organized

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I just returned from an exciting weekend Classical Singer Convention 2010 at the Times Square Marriott. This was a giant leap forward for my business (my website hits are way up, downloads are way up, new customers are way up) and a thrill for me personally.

Perhaps more importantly, I think it will go down as a turning point and a new chapter in the careers of many young singers. I am lucky to be a part of that new chapter for so many organized, empowered, forward-looking, “put together” artists.

I was able to meet very many young and talented singers and it was a huge opportunity for me to refine Velvet Singer Software’s value proposition. I am a technical guy, but what so many of you were interested in is not how cool the software is (and it is cool), but what benefit you get out of it.

In short, Velvet Singer helps you do things you already have to do more efficiently and more effectively. For example, you already have to file your taxes, you already have to keep track of what repertoire you sing, you already have to keep track of who you sang for. Why not do these things better?

More generally, recording your development in a career journal helps you feel more in control of this highly-subjective business. And how else will they complete your biography when you are rich and famous?

Velvet Singer is organizational software that helps you answer questions like this at the drop of a hat:

  • What active French rep do you sing?
  • How many coachings did you do last year?
  • How did you feel about your last audition?
  • What is your mission? What are your strength/weaknesses?
  • Did you make more money than last year?

I expect that putting a face to the name will help singers look to me for career / technical coaching. I am here to help so please call or email anytime.

Thank you to Classical Singer Magazine for putting on a great conference! As Editorial Director Sarah Thomas put it, the convention is all about making these connections possible. Young singers have many goals and desires. Velvet Singer is here to help.
