Speed Keys are the key to speed

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Speed keys are absolutely essential when if you would like to be an expert Velvet Singer user. We optimized the software for the speed use and for our advanced users. But it really isn’t difficult to get your chops going! We believe that all of our customers can achieve a very high level of proficiency by memorizing a few simple speed keys.

You can click around the top menu bar to discover them.  For example, the records menu shows speed keys assigned to Command+N, D, E, T, J, R and S. (On a Windows machine, these keys are the same but with Ctrl+ instead of Command). In the Auditions module, these speed keys will do the following things:

  • N = New Audition
  • D = Duplicate Audition
  • E = Delete Audition
  • T = Omit Audition (from the found set)
  • J = Show All Auditions (if you only have a small found set)
  • R = Modify Last Find
  • S = Sort

Highest Priority Keys

If nothing else, each Velvet Singer user should memorize these six speed keys. It should take you about 1/100th of the time it would take to memorize an aria!

Command+ on Mac / Ctrl+ on Windows:

  • 1 = Main Menu — then the first letter of the module (ex. “A” to go to auditions)
  • 2 = Dashboard
  • N = New Record
  • J = Show All Records

Control+ on Mac / Ctrl+ on Windows:

  • Down Arrow = Next Record
  • Up Arrow = Previous Record

Once you arrive at the Main Menu (Command+1 / Ctrl+1), you can type ahead to navigate to the module. For example, type “A” to navigate to the Auditions module from the Main Menu. Type Command+1 to open the Main Menu then type “F” to navigate to the Finances Module.

  • A = Auditions
  • F = Finances
  • R = Repertoire
  • C = Contacts
  • P = Projects
  • E = Events
  • M = eMail
  • J = Journal

Show All Records may not be an obvious need but it made the list of highest priority speed keys because you may find yourself “stuck” viewing only a subset of records. For example, if you go to your Repertoire module and find “Mozart”, you may find only three (3) records out of twenty (20) or so. You navigate to the record you wanted (Dies Bildnis) and found out that you have performed it 14 times in public. You have what you need, but now you flip to the list view and only see three (3) records! Simply fire off Command+J (or Ctrl+J) to show all twenty (20) records again. It is essentially an “undo” button after finding data.

Scrolling to Previous and Next records also may not seem like it is worthy of recognition, but it is the speed key we use the most. In a list view you can certainly use the mouse to scroll through the records but on the detail view it can be slow to use the rolodex in the upper left hand corner to find what you need. Using Control+down arrow is the way to go. (While we are on this topic, fn+down arrow on Mac / PgDn on Windows scrolls through an entire page in list view.)

Velvet Singer Helps Recent Grad Qiana McNary Transition

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Article by Sarah Alo

When Qiana McNary walked into her audition at Ohio Wesleyan University, she had not one bit of formal training. Armed with only her natural talent, plus the Italian aria she learned with the help of her high school chorus teacher, she went to the audition expecting nothing to come of it. She ended up with a full scholarship.

Now an opera singer and recent graduate of Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts, McNary uses Velvet Singer as an integral part of her career.

“It’s a useful tool, and it’s more specific than YAP Tracker,” McNary said.

Like most graduates transitioning from school to a career, McNary is not sure of her next move. She may want to continue her education and get her doctorate, or she may decide to prepare for auditions in the fall.

The transition is somewhat scary, but Velvet Singer helps. In school, she found that a lot of her appointments and scheduling were easier to keep up with, but now that she has graduated, Velvet Singer assists in organizing her career.

McNary’s recent and upcoming projects include the Southshore Opera Company’s Summer Nights, which featured staged scenes from famous operas like Le Nozze di Figaro (where she played Countess Almaviva), and other scenes from Carmen, The Pearl Fishers, Treemonisha, and Rigoletto. She also plans to audition with Hyde Park Union Church, and hopes to do a small Midwest tour with fellow African-American classical singers in a concert titled Classically Black. Her aspiration for the future, though, is to end up a mainstream opera singer at somewhere like The Met.

Singing is her great passion. “You get to express yourself in a different form. It sets me in a place like no other,” she said. “I like the learning part, too. Classical singing takes work.”

It takes work to keep up with all of the details, too. McNary uses Velvet Singer to do just that.

Even if singers cannot remember to keep up with the details of career management, Velvet Singer keeps them on track. It gives its users the option to set up an automatic launch of the program however often the user wants. Velvet Singer opens up for them, reminding them to stay on task. It also has a feature to help track expenses and earnings.

“I have it set to pop up every Wednesday,” McNary said. “I’m really bad about expenses, and it’s helpful with that. It helped when doing taxes. I was missing something and was able to find it with Velvet Singer and extract it right there.”

For her, the most useful part of Velvet Singer is the “Selection Performed by Success” report that keeps track of which repertoire was the most successful during auditions.

“It keeps track for me by counting how many times I am successful with the arias I used,” she said. “It’s really user-friendly.”

Opera New Jersey

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I am very excited to announce yet another seminar for this summer: the Studio Artists Programs at Opera New Jersey!

Keith Chambers serves as the music director for the program as well as the associate conductor for the summer season. He and his team will help frame what I am confident will be a very strong session with almost forty (40) gifted young singers on the verge of developing significant careers.

Young Artists at this stage will not only focus on Velvet Singer’s core journaling, audition logging, and repertoire tracking features, but will also have a need to manage their finances. For these singers Velvet Singer will become a comprehensive bookkeeping tool. They will be able to track their expenses and pick up tax tips along the way. And they will be able to quickly and easily reconcile their calendar with income that they received. For example, if an organization (such as Opera New Jersey) pays their singers bi-weekly, then each time a singer receives a check, the transaction is neatly filed away into Velvet Singer. Then come tax time, they will have everything organized. Perhaps more importantly, they will also be able to watch the growth of their business and see which types of gigs (church, YAP, chorus) have provided the most income.

I am thrilled to come through Princeton in late July and look forward to building many long-term relationships with the Studio Artists at Opera New Jersey.

Classical Singer Convention 2010

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I am very excited to contribute to Classical Singer’s fantastic annual competition. The competition final rounds will take place during the Classical Singer Convention this May at Times Square in New York City. Velvet Singer will be on hand to exhibit our software and seminars, to present awards to competition finalists, and to support Classical Singer’s highly-valuable mission. I am thrilled to be in the company of so many veterans of our industry and expect to learn a lot.

University Award

I will present a free copy of Velvet Singer Software to each of the finalists in the University Competition at the close of the Final Round Concert on Sunday, May 30th. Each copy of Velvet Singer Software at the student price is worth $145.99. I will award over $1,000 worth of free software.

Each of the five to seven (5-7) singers chosen as finalists from the undergraduate and graduate divisions will have demonstrated extraordinary talent and ability to deliver. These young singers will make ideal recipients of this prize because they will be able to derive immediate value from Velvet Singer’s journaling and audition-tracking features. They will also enjoy getting their repertoire organized by selecting from Velvet Singer’s list of over 2,600 arias.

Professional Track Award

I will also present a free copy of Velvet Singer Software to each of the top rated Professional Track singers at the Winner’s Concert on Sunday, May 30th. Each copy of Velvet Singer Software is worth $195.99, therefore I will award up to $2,000 worth of free software.

Each of these eight to ten (8-10) singers has demonstrated consistent quality and career potential through the unique and valuable Audition Feedback Experience auditions and call backs. These emerging professional singers will immediately gain insight into their careers by tracking their gigs, organizing their repertoire lists, and managing their income and professional expenses with the help of Velvet Singer Software.

Best of luck to all of the participants!
